One of my friend had just returned from KL few days ago and the first thing out from the mouth is about how the taxi driver overcharging or refusing to go to destination. I was reading my daily ping from PPS and had already read 2 post regarding the taxi driver as well. One of the blogger, Shaolin Tiger had an accident with careless taxi diver and poor Eve get scammed by the taxi driver a few times in one day!
Taxi service played an important role in Malaysia’s public transport. But yet the issues about them are like Never Ending Problems. Most of the problems revolve around issues like taxi drivers not using meter or refusing to take a passenger to the destination. Normally the taxi driver will quote a certain price, which is usually overcharging. The customer will have to bargain or just hail another taxi with hope that they won’t try to scam you. However, the hope is thin as most of the taxi drivers are playing the same game. Sometimes, even if you manage to get a taxi driver whom will use the meter, some of the rotten eggs will tried to use longer route to the destination. Even if you protest, they will just murmur that the shorter route has traffic jam or construction work in progress. It would be your most unlucky day if you happened to board an inexperience taxi driver whom doesn’t seems to know the way and you happened to be in urgent.
And these taxi problems does not occur only in big city like KL. I have my share of bad experience with taxi drivers in Kuching. I had taken taxi for a few times in Kuching and never saw any of them them using taximeter. Normally, they will quote a certain price. Imagine been charged RM15 for less than 10 minutes drives to destination. The worst experience I had would be a few years ago when I was at Kuching wharf. It was raining heavily and I quickly signaled to one taxi driver with umbrella. He shielded me to his taxi and LEFT me there while he hunted for another customer. So there I am, sitting in his shabby old taxi and breathing with limited air while rain are pouring heavily outside. After 15 minutes, I got pissed off and went out in the rain to look for him. This is the trend of taxi drivers in Kuching. They will try to stuff a few customers in the taxi but they still charge everyone the same price. Strangely I never experience this of problem when I was in Cheras for 1 years plus.
It’s not a wonder why taxi driver was never a popular transport mode among the locals. They always tried to overcharge the customer through various methods and yet they keep on complaining of bad business and refusing to use the meter or want the government to heighten the fare. They are the cause of their own demise.
I am sure that there are some good taxi drivers but rotten apples often makes the most memorable impression. As this problem are not getting solved anytime sooner, it is best to armed yourself with knowledge on how to handle taxi drivers. These are some of the common scenes in Malaysia. Let’s make it short, if they are not using meter, try on the next cab for a reasonable journey. Don’t waste your hard earn $.

Agreed. Was in Penang last weekend. A 3 minute ride costs 10 ringgits, 10 minutes ride costs me 35 ringgits — no bargain. It is ridiculous. Taxi in Singapore is even cheaper.
